Society of the Mind is a book about ideas. Can a machine achieve consciousness? Is knowledge an ever-mutating virus that can be either benign or malignant? Can the virus be passed from man to man, man to machine, machine back to man? And what will happen once humans have built a more suitable host for the parasite? For more information on Society of the Mind, see HarperCollins.

Following Arc Light, I went to work on Protect & Defend -- a military/political technothriller about the collapse of Russia into anarchy, an attempt by China to claim Siberia, and the American and European "blue berets" who are in the wrong place at the wrong time. I'm now back with the troops on the frigid Eurasian plain, but I took a feverish six-week detour to produce the first draft of a book about artificial intelligence, virtual reality, and robotics. Society of the Mind may be about computers, but it sprang from my reading of a book entitled Consciousness Explained by Daniel Dennett. I've since forsworn further reading until I've completely finished the project to which I'm committed.
